Acids, Bases and Salts

Acids In everyday life we deal with many compounds that chemists classify as acids. For example, orange juice and grapefruit juice contain citric acid. These juices, and others, also contain ascorbic acid, a substance more commonly known as Vitamin C. Salads are often flavored with vinegar, which contains dilute acetic acid. Boric acid is a substance that is sometimes used to wash the eyes. In any chemistry laboratory, we find acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid. These acids are called mineral acids because they can be prepared from naturally occurring compounds called minerals. Mineral acids are generally stronger than household acids, and should be handled with great care because they can burn skin and clothing. Bases: Ammonium hydroxide, or ammonia water, is very irritating to the nose and the eyes. This substance, called a hydroxide, or a base, is often used in the home for cleaning because bases generally dissolve grease. Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), which is used as an antacid, is a base; lye (sodium hydroxide), which is used in the manufacture of soap, is another familiar example of base. Bases are ionic compounds containing metal ions and hydroxide ions.

For example, sodium hydroxide contains sodium ions and hydroxide ions. When sodium metal is placed in water, sodium hydroxide is formed and hydrogen gas is released. Since the formula for water can be written as HOH instead of H2O, the reaction involves single replacement: 2 Na (s) + 2 HOH (l) 2 NaOH (aq) + H2 (g) Salts: Many chemical compounds may be classified as salts. The salt most familiar to all of us is table salt -- sodium chloride. Baking soda is the salt sodium bicarbonate. Magnesium sulfate, also called Epsom salts, is often found in the home In general, salts are ionic compounds that are composed of metallic ions and nonmetallic ions. For example, sodium chloride is composed of metallic sodium ions and nonmetallic chloride ions. Some salts are composed of metallic polyatomic ions and nonmetallic polyatomic ions (ammonium nitrate is composed of ammonium ions and nitrate ions).

Accreditation of courses with IAO

I was finally able to complete the accreditation form. Whiles we waitenow for IAO to inform us of the outcome, we are seriously working on the programmes

The Periodic Table

Welcome to todays lesson on the periodic table. Lets start with a song on the elements

Now that we are true with the song lets move on for details on the elements
In our next activity, we are going to learn about ionic and covalent bonds

Accreditation of course

we are currently in the process of getting accreditation from the International Accreditation organisation to enable give certificates in Diploma and possible degree programmes we are running online.

Patrons will soon earn certificates that can be used world wide in the fields of computer education and communication.

Where there is a way

Just looking back, I am with the conviction that, I will be able to fulfill the dream of helping integrate ICT into the teaching learning process much faster than planned.

I am therefore burning the mid-night candle currently to ensure that the dream becomes a reality.

Tamale Metro consistently performs poorly in BECE

The Tamale Metropolis [reported] has, for seven years, been performing poorly at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In 2004 the Metropolis was 60th on the BECE league table in the country and in 2005 and 2006 it wase the 69th and 88th respectively, while in 2007 and 2008 it placed 91st and 89th respectively.

For 2009 and 2010 it had the unenviable record of being placed as the 98th and 103rd on the BECE league table.

Alhaji Abudulai Haruna Friday, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, said this at a Town Hall Meeting in Tamale on Thursday to throw light on the achievements and challenges facing the Assembly during its two years in Office.

Alhaji Friday attributed the abysmal performance of the Metropolis in the BECE to among other things to inadequate funds to ensure effective monitoring and supervision that had resulted in teachers' lateness or absenteeism and indiscipline on the part of students. more>>
